Ichigo Kurosaki is a high school teenager who is gifted with the ability to see spirits. He's been a very normal life, until he met a female Soul Reaper, which is drastically changed his life...

"The One" who governs the flow of souls between the human world and the afterlife — named Rukia Kuchiki, who arrives in search of a Hollow, a dangerous lost soul. However, the Hollow that Rukia tried to hunt is too strong and she'd severely wounded.

At that moment, Ichigo appears in front of Rukia and she attempts to transfer a part of her reiatsu (霊圧, literally, "spiritual pressure") energy to Ichigo. She commanded Ichigo to help her defeat the Hollow.

However, Ichigo absorbs almost all of her energy, and transforming into a Soul Reaper! Ichigo defeated the Hallow with ease, after the transformation. Meanwhile, Rukia's power had diminished, and she can't go back to Soul Society without her power. So, she decided to stay in the human world and wait until she gain back her strength.

In the other hand, Ichigo must take over Rukia's role as a Soul Reaper, battling Hollows and guiding souls to the afterlife realm known as the Soul Society (尸魂界 (ソウル·ソサエティ) Sōru Sosaeti).
